Dodsworth Women, Dorothy, Eileen, Margaret, Joan,Betty

Remembrance Day. This is the only photo I have of my Dad’s 5 sisters together. The Dodsworth women were all smart, with a strong sense of social justice and stunning redheads. They each played a part in the war effort in Brisbane, two of them helping in PX canteens that provided food and supplies to US service men. Years later, love letters and a marriage proposal to one of them from an ardent American sailor were discovered. Apparently my grandfather shared the general Aussie opinion that Yanks were “overpaid, oversexed and over here” and not an acceptable suitor for his daughter. War had an impact even on those who didn’t go to battle.
